The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament
Raphael paints belief as a community. At the center of a balanced composition, a monstrance rests on an altar; around it, saints, popes, and theologians debate and adore. Above, in a half-circle of cloud and gold, the Trinity aligns on a single axis—God the Father, Christ, and the Spirit as a dove—binding heaven to earth. Painted c. 1509–1510 for the Stanza della Segnatura, this fresco complements the School of Athens across the room: philosophy has its partner in theology. The perspective is gentle, the gestures clear, the light calm. The subject is less dispute than agreement—truth made visible around a circle of bread.
