Sarcophagus Front of the "Bethesda" Type

Sarcophagus Front of the "Bethesda" Type
300–400 Marble sarcophagus fragment Classical Pius-Christian Museum

This Late Antique fragment shows the Gospel healing at Bethesda: Christ, youthful and authoritative, gestures to the paralytic who rises, bedroll on shoulder, while a lidded pool or water personification denotes the site. The style is Roman—broad planes, deep drill, architectural screens—but the message is Christian grace over customary cures. A tomb’s promise is spelled in stone: ‘take up your bed and walk’ toward new life.

Visiting Tips

Stand slightly to the left so Christ’s gesture leads your eye across the panel to the lifted pallet.

Why This Artwork Is Important

  • Clear early Christian relief linking miracle, mercy, and resurrection hope.
  • Adapts Roman relief vocabulary to a compact Gospel emblem.

What to Look For

  • Christ with raised right hand of command.
