New Wing

The New Wing (Braccio Nuovo) is a neoclassical gallery built to display Rome’s sculpture with even top light and measured, architectural order. It reads like a marble boulevard: emperors, generals, gods, and personifications arranged to teach history by faces and forms. Highlights include the Augustus of Prima Porta at the vista’s end, a colossal Nile reclining amid river creatures, and finely carved portrait heads that show fashion and propaganda across centuries. Pavements and wall details echo ancient motifs while keeping the sculptures calm and legible. More than a passageway, the hall is a curated lesson in Roman identity—how rulers wished to be seen, and how stone can project authority and memory.
