Last Judgement

This panel lays out the end of days in orderly registers. Christ reigns within a blue mandorla, flanked by angels; below, the apostles sit as witnesses. Trumpeters wake the dead, Saint Michael lifts his scales for the psychostasia, and a tangle of demons drags the condemned toward a fiery maw. Painted c. 1400–1410 by two masters named Nicolaus and Johannes, the work uses a gold ground, crisp drawing, and punched haloes to bind fear and hope into a single promise. Its purpose is practical: teach the eye the story at a glance and fix the soul on mercy.
