Immaculate Conception (Podesti)

Commissioned to mark Pius IX’s proclamation of the Immaculate Conception in 1854, Podesti’s fresco turns doctrine into spectacle. Mary appears as the spotless Virgin—light-filled and set among symbols of purity—while papal ceremony, theologians, and allegorical figures anchor the event in Church history. Academic drawing, clear color, and theatrical groupings guide the eye from the pope’s authority to Marian devotion. The work is both a record of a defining 19th-century moment and a flourish of modern fresco practice within the Vatican’s walls.
