Ceiling of Prophets and Sibyls (Borgia Apartment)

Pinturicchio turns the Borgia Hall into a humanist chapel of voices: twelve sibyls from classical lore alternate with Old Testament prophets, each presenting a scroll of prophecy read as pointing to Christ. The small, elegant figures sit within a lattice of gilded ribs and painted stucco effects; margins bloom with grotesques—hybrids, urns, garlands, and tiny scenes—borrowed from newly rediscovered Roman wall painting. Color is enamel-bright, drawing the eye across the vault as if leafing a manuscript overhead. The program fuses learning and devotion: pagan wisdom and Scripture harmonized in the service of Renaissance theology and papal image-making.
