Bramante Staircase (Original Spiral Staircase)
Bramante’s helical ramp solves a practical problem with poetic geometry: a broad, gently sloped spiral that allowed courtiers and pack animals to ascend without stairs. Doric columns rhythm the curve; light wells puncture the wall. It is architecture as motion—classical order turning in space.
Why This Artwork Is Important
- Icon of Renaissance engineering: a usable, processional double-helix ramp.
- Influenced later designs, including the modern ‘Bramante’ staircase visitors exit today.
What to Look For
- Continuous slope sized for hooves as well as feet.
- Drum of Doric columns marking each turn.
- Light shafts cutting the masonry to aerate the spiral.
Fun Fact
The famous modern spiral by Momo (1932) is a 20th-century homage, not Bramante’s.
