Attic Red-Figure Hydria (Berlin Painter)

The Berlin Painter perfected a spare red-figure style: one or two large figures set alone on a lustrous black field, their bodies described by supple contours and restrained interior lines. On this hydria—the three-handled jar used for water—the main figure floats with dignified poise, framed by palmettes at the handle roots and a crisp meander band. Details come from precise relief line and dilute-glaze shading rather than busy pattern. The result is clarity: form reads from across a room, while close viewing rewards the delicacy of fingertips, folds, and hair.
