Ancient Roman Two-Horse Chariot (Biga)

The Vatican biga combines an ancient marble chariot car with restored elements to suggest the spectacle of Rome's races and processions. The car's front panel carries crisp reliefs; flanking horses rear as if about to surge. Such displays once thundered around the Circus Maximus or rolled in triumphal routes—now the marble freezes their motion so viewers can study line, harness, and pageantry at rest.
