Nicolas Poussin

Nicolas Poussin was the leading painter of French Baroque classicism, famed for lucid compositions, sculptural figures, and narratives shaped by ancient Roman art. Working largely in Rome, he distilled drama into poised geometry and austere color. In the Vatican Museums he is represented by the altarpiece “Martyrdom of Saint Erasmus,” whose solemn architecture and clear storytelling epitomize his classical ideal.
