Leochares
Leochares was a 4th-century BCE Athenian sculptor famed for poised, idealized figures. The Roman marble Apollo Belvedere—long attributed to him—embodies the late Classical canon: balanced contrapposto, elastic gesture, and refined drapery. Even as attribution is debated, the sculpture’s ‘Leochares’ style shaped how Europe pictured divine beauty.
