Jan Matejko
Jan Matejko was a Polish historical painter whose panoramic battles and ceremonial portraits shaped 19th-century national art. Trained in Kraków and Munich, he united academic finish with theatrical staging, meticulous costume research, and emblematic symbolism. In the Vatican Museums he is represented by the monumental “Sobieski at Vienna” (1883), his tribute to King John III’s 1683 victory, where pageantry becomes an allegory of faith, sovereignty, and European alliance.
