Herakleitos
Herakleitos is the named Roman mosaicist who signed the famed “Asarotos Oikos” (“Unswept Floor”)—a witty illusion of banquet scraps scattered across a dining room. The composition reinterprets a Hellenistic prototype by Sosos, rendering shells, bones, and peels with virtuoso realism. The Vatican example demonstrates the high craft of Roman domestic mosaics and their taste for playful trompe-l’oeil.
